Opportunities for the Disabled had a humble start in 1996, in  the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

A group of friends were sitting around and having a general discussion that led to how hard it was for people with physical challenges to get around in the snow, and how many of their friends, and family had a hard time affording special needs equipment, and computers.

At this time computers, and the Internet were really starting to  boom and become practical. However  how could individuals with disabilities benefit from them ? and how could they acquire one ?

One of our founders' Grandmothers demonstrated an amazing random act of kindness by helping one of her good friends to purchase a scooter after she lost her legs and could not afford to do so herself. A need not covered by most medical care plans.

Therefore the idea for the charity formation was set. We sought out how to make life easier, and more accessible, and more fulfilling for people with mobility issues and physical disabilities, and to help them better integrate into society.

Our focus was how the internet could help and how we could "recycle" equipment for people that otherwise could not afford their special needs was the premise for the formation of the company.

After several discussions and planning Opportunities for the Disabled Foundation was born March 26, 1996.

One of our first projects was building a wheelchair ramp for a family in Edmonton, AB. The medical system would not pay for this special need. A need that cost over $1600.00 at that time.

From this first project Opportunities for the Disabled Foundation has literally benefited and touched the lives of thousands of people with physical disabilities accross Canada, and the world, via our various community supported programs.

We have based our Organization programs on simple concepts of recycling, information, and empowerment, all in order to help physically challenged people to live more fulfilling, and independent lives.

Our Board, members, volunteers and staff really do care ! and together we are making a difference and helping all peoples with physical disabilities without regard to race, religon, and status to have more fulfilling and independent lives throughout Canada, and the world.

Thank you for being a "
friend of the disabled"
